History
Salem cemetery was given by Morton Campbell, a five acre tract off his farm and first burials were Rebecca Grisham and Adelaide Hamilton in 1878. The first church built in Foster was adjacent to the cemetery and became known as the Salem Presbyterian Church. Later, that building was occupied by the Southern Methodist Congregation. In an early writing, Olaf Rhoades relates that in the early 1900’s, church members would meet each spring to clean, the ladies the church and the men and boys the cemetery grounds. After debris was gathered, a fire was set to burn the grounds. The men used wet sacks to fight the fire around the church so it would not burn down the building.
