History
Reubin Davis Radford, born in Kentucky in 1836, came with his father and mother, William Layton and Jane Hicks Radford and family to Bates County and settled near Spruce in 1856. Davis married Jane Hopkins in 1856. He gave the land for the Radford Cemetery, thought to have been given before the Civil War. Before any graves were there, the plot was used for Brush Arbor meetings, the preachers being circuit riders traveling from place to place wherever a pulpit could be arranged. The Methodist Church was rebuilt after the Civil War as well as a Presbyterian Church.
Many names can be found in the cemetery representing several generations, most all being direct descendents or related by marriage to William Layton Radford, who died in 1875.
